A lapped fence has overlapping palings fixed to rails, with the top edges left exposed. Lapped-and-capped adds a horizontal capping rail along the top, which covers the paling ends, gives the fence a finished straight top line, and protects the end grain from weather. Capped costs more and lasts longer.
